-
What are traditional barrier coatings made from?
Typically, traditional barrier coatings are made from PET (plastic) or PFAS. PFAS (Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are a family of over 10,000 synthetic chemicals, also referred to as ‘forever chemicals’. PFAS can be found in many products used in everyday life, from conventional food packaging to cleaning products. In fact, PFAS has been used so much, that they can be found in all water on Earth. PFAS can pollute the environment for decades as they do not break down easily.

What is Morro Coating made from?
Morro Coating is made from plant protein, with no chemical modification. Using a range of abundant feedstocks (such as peas, potatoes, rapeseed and more) we extract the natural plant polymers and rearrange the structure to make our high-performance, versatile, planet-friendly materials.

Is food packaging recyclable?
When food packaging is clean or can easily be wiped clean with no food residue, it can be recycled. However, some barrier coatings may impact the recylability of the paper. Paper with Morro Coating has been externally validated, proving it is suitable for recycling at standard recycling mills.

What is the SUPD?
SUPD stands for the Single-Use Plastics Directive, which is an EU law that focuses on reducing the impact of single-use plastics on the environment. This directive consists of a range of different measures including bans, marking requirement, collection requirements, and additional costs such as plastic taxes. Morro materials are completely plastic-free, therefore SUPD exempt.
