Just Eat Takeaway expands plastic-free Morro Coating range across Europe
Xampla’s plastic-free Morro Coating enters 10 European markets in partnership with Just Eat Takeaway with new packaging range from Huhtamaki. The delivery takeaway boxes with plastic-free coating will now be available in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, and Spain.
The boxes are made by sustainable packaging solutions leader, Huhtamaki, with our world-first Morro Coating, made from natural plant proteins with no chemical modification. Designed to perform across a wide range of foods and cuisines, the packaging maintains rigidity and heat retention even with greasy or moist dishes that have traditionally been difficult to package without plastic.
The boxes are fully recyclable, Single Use Plastic Directive (SUPD) compliant, and made from sustainably sourced corrugated paper. This packaging solution offers the food delivery market a high-performance plastic-free alternative to traditional takeaway boxes, typically lined with plastic or PFAS.
Following successful launches with Lieferando in Germany and Austria, this expanded rollout extends Morro Coating across the full breadth of Just Eat Takeaway.com’s European platform. The partnership has already been commended for its sustainability and innovation, winning multiple industry awards.
Morro Coating has been designed to make it simple for packaging converters to deliver regulatory-compliant solutions for their customers. Verified as plastic-free by the UK’s leading metrology institute, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), Morro Coating is SUPD-exempt. Our plastic-free innovation also proven compatibility with existing recycling streams. Unlike traditional plastic coatings, paperboard packaging that uses Morro™ Coating can be processed through established waste streams without the need for plastic separation.
Just Eat Takeaway.com“We’re excited to be partnering with innovative companies that share our vision of eliminating single-use plastic waste and making responsible choices that create value for our partners and consumers. Expanding our collaboration with Xampla marks a significant milestone in accelerating the adoption of plastic-free packaging across the on-demand delivery industry.”
Supporting partners in adopting more sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics is part of Just Eat Takeaway.com’s broader efforts to address plastic pollution in the on-demand delivery industry. This rollout further expands Just Eat’s sustainable packaging range, providing restaurant partners continent-wide with the ability to choose plastic-free for a wider range of dishes.
